Tolerances

Diameter Tolerance: Refer to Material Specifications page for tolerances for each material.

All bars are checked with an insert bearing prior to shipment.
Cold Drawn Bars: -.0005, -.002' typical (+0, -.004' allowed)
TGP Bars: -.0005', -.0015' typical (+0, -.003' allowed)

Saw Cut Length Tolerance = +/- 1/16' (+/- 1/32' typical). Tighter tolerances available.

Straightness Tolerance = .012' per foot, .006' typical. Straightness is not guaranteed.
Special straightness bars available.

Keyway

The system also applies to orthogonal or linear features such as slots and keys. The system uses letters and numbers. The letters indicate the clearance while the number specifics the precision or tolerance. A capital letter refers to the hole size and lower-case letter refers to the shaft size. Square keys are used for smaller shafts and rectangular faced keys are used for shaft diameters over 6.5 in (170 mm) or when the wall thickness of the mating hub is an issue. Set screws often accompany parallel keys to lock the mating parts into place. The keyway is a longitudinal slot in both the shaft and mating part. The keyway dimensions are also different from the English system. Metric keyways are dimensioned by width and depth as measured from the radius of the shaft to the center of the keyway. See dimensions W and h in Figure 1. Unless otherwise specified, the shaft keyway is assumed to be standard.
